Carl von Linné and his family’s summer residence, Hammarby, are a well-preserved 18th-century farm with houses, gardens, and beautiful surroundings. Here, Linné’s students also came to listen to him and study plants. In the Botanical Garden, research and education go hand in hand with beauty and recreation. There are both an older and a newer part, an orangery, and a Tropical greenhouse.

Linné’s Hammarby is nestled in an extensive cultivated landscape. In the cultural reserve, a 18th-century landscape has been recreated with forests, fields, meadows, a cabbage garden, and a hop garden. The estate was purchased by Carl von Linné in 1758 as a refuge from Uppsala’s unhealthy environment. In the lush park, many of the plants Linné cultivated himself thrive. We visit the residential house with a guide and experience the estate, exhibition, and shop independently. There is also a café here serving us morning coffee and sandwiches.

We then head towards Uppsala city where lunch is served.

In the Botanical Garden, you will find greenery and flowering plants all year round. In the Tropical greenhouse, Uppsala’s finest rainforest, there are orchids, banana and coffee plants, but also plants from deserts and other dry areas. The Orangery houses cacti, Linné’s laurel trees, figs, and olive trees. During spring, summer, and autumn, colorful summer flowers, rare mountain plants, trees, bushes, and appetizing kitchen plants from around the world attract visitors for walks in the garden. Here, research, education, and the preservation of biodiversity go hand in hand with beauty, recreation, and education. From Rudbeck, Linné, and Thunberg to modern botany today. Our guide shows Botan from above, i.e., with a view from the Castle, before we enter the garden. We then continue down to the City Garden where we learn more about the park, the art, and the Fyris River. There is time for purchasing ice cream, coffee, or just enjoying a moment of rest in the lovely greenery.
